The Buncombe County Schools Student Services team is ready to help families of high school seniors apply for financial aid. Counselors are hosting FAFSA Support Day, offering face-to-face help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid application.

The event will take place Tuesday, Apr. 1 from 1 to 5pm at Buncombe County Schools Central Services, 175 Bingham Rd. in Asheville.

“We want to make sure our students have every opportunity to achieve their future goals,” said Kelley Adams, BCS Student Services Program Specialist. “The FAFSA can help students seeking financial aid for college, but funds are also available for other uses. For instance, if a student is looking to join a family agriculture business, it can provide funding to help earn a credential that could lead to increased profits for products.”

FAFSA Support Day is free. Parents/guardians can sign up to participate here. They should bring the following items to their appointment to complete the FAFSA application:

  • Student's Social Security Number

  • Parent's Social Security Number

  • Student’s Driver License Number (if the student is a licensed driver)

  • Student's Alien Registration Number (if the student is not a U.S. citizen)

  • Federal tax information or tax returns for the parent (if the student is still a dependent) and the student

  • Untaxed income information such as interest income, noneducation veteran benefits, child support received for the student and the parents if the student is still a dependent

  • Financial information such as cash, bank account balances, investment accounts, businesses and farms for the parent (if the student is still a dependent) and the student

In addition to FAFSA application assistance, families can also find out about several scholarship opportunities. College representatives and translators will also be on site. For more information, contact the Student Services Department at your senior’s school.
