It’s National School Breakfast Week, and Buncombe County Schools students are celebrating with more iron - particularly hammers and nails.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) students at the six BCS traditional high schools have been building “second chance” breakfast carts. Funding for materials is made possible by the North Carolina Innovative School Breakfast grant provided by the Carolina Hunger Initiative.
"Many high school students like to eat later in the day,” said BCS Nutrition Director Lisa Payne. “This allows them an opportunity to pick up breakfast items between their first and second blocks. It’s easier to focus on learning when your body is nourished.”
The project involved several high school CTE programs, including woodworking, welding, and agriculture mechanics.
“This is another exciting collaboration that gives our students real-world experience,” said CTE director Michele Smith. “It’s great for them to see their craftsmanship in action at their schools.”
Once again this year, BCS is offering free breakfast and lunch to all students.
