A community event is preparing to help students once again get dressed up to dance - and much more - for free.
The Prom Dress Exchange returns to Groce United Methodist Church in east Asheville this March. Now in its fifth year, the Exchange has grown beyond just prom and just dresses. It features formal and semi-formal wear including long and short dresses (sizes 00-4XL), women’s suits and separates, men’s suits and tuxedos, shoes, jewelry and accessories.
“The event volunteers work one-on-one with every single person who comes to the event, ensuring a personalized service and providing an exceptional experience,” shared organizer Marsha van Rejssen. “We make sure the attire is perfectly fitted with onsite alterations, and each accessory adds the extra bling to make the outfit shine.”
The event is designed to help students plan for more than prom night.
“This experience will give each attendant the confidence and self esteem to make prom night or whatever the occasion may be a special one,” van Rejssen shared. “We can help students get ready for an 8th grade dance, wedding, interview, or school activities such as DECA, Mock Trial, or the Military Ball. They can have a cherished and everlasting memory without the burden of spending money on an outfit that may only be worn once or twice.”
You can help the Prom Dress Exchange by making a donation or volunteering to help students check in, pick out items, and assist with alterations. You can view volunteer opportunities at this link.
The event is open to all students and runs March 6 from 2-6 p.m., March 7 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and March 8 from 12-4 p.m. Groce United Methodist is located at 954 Tunnel Road.
