Welcome to my Classroom

Marilynn Whitcher
North Windy Ridge Intermediate

I am very excited to be teaching 5th grade, math and science, at North Windy Ridge!  I graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in Elementary Education.
I am constantly seeking growth! In December of 2012 I graduated with my Masters of Education, a concentration in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages through Western Carolina. In November of 2014 I became a National Board Certified Teacher. These were both great accomplishments for me and I learned so much that I can incorporate in the classroom!
This is my 19th year teaching children!
I enjoy spending time outside: running, paddle boarding, hiking, or biking with my 11-year-old hound mix, Sampson. I have traveled all over the world and appreciate the culture and experiences that travel has to offer!

This past summer I spent 3 weeks traveling Italy and then hiked 60 miles of the John Muir Trail out in Yosemite National Forest.  For me, summer is the perfect time to hit the refresh button by doing what I love most, exploring new places:)

The summer of 2018 I spent 10 days hiking in the Canadian Rockies.  We traveled to Banff National Forest and enjoyed the beauty all around that area!
The summer of 2016 was spent traveling in Indonesia!  I spent 3 weeks in Bali and Lombok.  I spent 3 days trekking the 2nd highest mountain in Indonesia and enjoyed the beaches and culture of this lovely country!

In 2014 I traveled to Spain and walked 300 miles across El Camino de Santiago. It was an amazing experience!  I had lost my father suddenly that school year and decided that I needed to find a way to reconnect and organize my life again.   That walk did the trick, such a beautiful experience.
I am a certified yoga instructor and enjoy sharing my love of yoga and mindfulness with others.  I have also participated in the Mindful Schools online program and am thrilled to share mindfulness practices with students. It's a great way to have students center themselves and feel that sense of peace from within.
I teach 5th grade Math and Science and have the best partner ever, Tiffany Harris, who teaches Social Studies and Language Arts.  We are looking forward to a wonderful year!
