Students enjoying a book tasting in the Media Center.

The fifth grade students have been taking part in a book tasting hosted in the school Media Center. This reading activity is designed to help students find new books to read. It gives them an opportunity to not only see what books are available, but to discover new genres and authors.

The event creates excitement and interest when the students enter the Media Center to find tablecloths, place settings, and piles of books to browse with a fire flickering on the Smartboard. The tables are arranged by genre and students rotate through the stations every three minutes. They can also create a to-be-read list to keep track of potential future reads. The fifth grade English Language Arts teachers frequently join their students at the tables to browse. Once the event ends, they have the opportunity to check out the books they have discovered.

Ms. Brillisour and Mrs. Cole, the Media Center staff, love to see students' excitement  when they find the perfect books.

When asked about the book tasting Emma said, “I loved it! I got to read different types of books. I checked out the book Murder is Bad Manners.”
