2017-18 NWR After School Clubs - Exciting Opportunities

Hello NWR Parents! We are excited to be able to offer many curriculum related after school clubs this year. If your child is interested in participating,  please fill out this form and return it to the homeroom teacher or complete online      (you can find the link at our school website) by Thursday,September 14, Space is limited in most clubs and sign ups are on a first come, first served basis. To include as many students as possible, we encourage them to indicate below their 1st and 2nd choice clubs. Students will only be assigned to one club unless there are additional spaces available. _______ARTE OLE’ Club Leaders: Dietra Garden, Art Teacher & Marci Vicente, Spanish Teacher  Do you like Art Class? Do you like Spanish class? Well, you’re in luck! Señora Vicente and Mrs Garden will be coming together to bring you fun, flavors, awareness, food and artistic activities to broaden your knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language and culture. Come experience Hispanic culture and arts on Monday afternoons October - December 3:00-4:00. Space is limited to 20 students.


_______ARTWORKS Club Leader: Melanie Bentley, EC Teacher Create fun and dramatic drawings, shadowing famous and current artists!  Learn to express your dreams and feelings with color, shape, and artistic attitude! This club will meet in Room 401 from 3:00-4:00 on Wednesdays September 27 through December 13. There will be a $10 fee for art supplies. Space is limited to 20 students.


_______BATTLE OF THE BOOKS - 5TH GRADE Club Leaders: Kim Ferguson & Jeremy Aten, Title I Reading Teachers and Deanne Stowe & Danielle Cripps, EC Teachers. Are you a fifth grader who loves to read? Then Battle of the Books is the club for you! BOB is an after school club for students who love to read.  Students work together throughout the school year to read a list of 18 books. In the spring, we will compete against other fifth grade teams on knowledge of the books. Teams consist of 12 students total, but six students compete per round. Students answer questions with the book title and author. BOB meets after school every Tuesday in the Media Center until 3:45 beginning October 3 through mid March. Go to the media center for a copy of the book list. Fee is $20.00 for a club t-shirt and lunch on the day of the competition. Space limited 12 students. _______BATTLE OF THE BOOKS - 6TH GRADE Club Leaders: Rachel Brillsour, Media Specialist & Dietra Garden, Art Teacher  LOVE to read? Are you in sixth grade? The Battle of the Books is the club for you! Battle of the Books is an after school club for sixth grade students who LOVE to read. Students work throughout the school year to read a list of 27 books. In the spring we will compete against other Intermediate and Middle School teams on knowledge of the books. Teams consist of twelve students total, but six students compete per round. Students answer questions with the book title and author. Battle of the Books meets after school on Wednesdays until 3:30. The team will begin meeting on September 27 through mid March in the Media Center. Space is limited to 12 students.


______CHORUS Club Leader: Barbara Budhisetiawan, Music Teacher Chorus members must love to sing!  We will learn vocal techniques while learning songs to perform in our school and in the community.  Chorus members are expected to attend practices and performances. A $10 fee will cover the cost of a T-shirt. Chorus will meet in the Music Room 316 every Tuesday until 4:00 all year starting September 26. Space is limited to 40 students.


_______DISC GOLF Club Leaders Jeremy Aten, Title 1 teacher & Trista Huffman, Remediation Assistant. Disc golf is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc. This club will meet Thursdays, October 5 - Dec. 14 until 4:00 in  Room 313 - Title 1 Room. There is a $5.00 fee for this club. Space is limited to 12 students.


_______HAWKS FLIGHT RUNNING CLUB Club Leaders: Amy Jamerson, 6th Gr School Counselor, Devon Prott, 5th Gr Math/Science teacher, Trista Huffman, Remediation Assistant. Do you enjoy walking or jogging?  If so, this club is for you. Each student will set personal fitness goals to gradually increase their distance and time, with the end goal of completing a 5K run. Please be prepared each week with appropriate outdoor clothing and tennis shoes. We’ll meet from 3:00-4:00 on Mondays starting March 19 through May. We will begin each meeting in the cafeteria, and then head out to run the NWR outdoor track and trails. A $10 fee will cover T-shirts, snacks and water.  Space limited to 50 students.


_______LOGIC CLUB Club Leader: Jim Tracy, 5th Grade Math/ Science Teacher  Use of Mathematical inquiry for fun!  Puzzle solving to the max. This club will meet in Room 101 West Wing each Wednesday September 27 through

November 15. Space is limited to 10 students.


_______SKI CLUB Club Leaders: Suzie Johnson, 5th Grade Lang Arts/SS teacher, Dietra Garden, Art Teacher This winter, students will be able to ski (or learn to ski) for an exceptionally low price, thanks to Wolf Ridge Ski Resort supporting our school. Starting in January, when we return from winter break, students will be offered an after school ski trip every Tuesday through February (weather permitting). The cost is $30 per student each week for lift ticket, ski rental and group ski lessons. (Snowboards can be rented for $5 more. A helmet is required. You may bring your own or rent one for $5). Permission forms and additional information will be sent home before the winter break in December. We will depart NWR at 3:00 pm and return to school by 8:30 pm for student pick up. Space is limited to 40 students.


______SONGWRITING CLUB Club Leader: Russell Thompson, STEM Teacher Unleash your inner songwriter as we craft songs as a group and individually. We'll finish off with a recording of your song, and the group songs, on a CD to keep for years to come. This club will meet in the STEM classroom 307 from 3:00-4:00 on Wednesdays September 27 through November 15. Space is limited to 8 students.


______STEM CHALLENGE Club Leader: Tara Teague, 5th Grade Math/ Science Teacher If you enjoy STEM challenges, problem solving and working in groups to build and design, test ideas, etc... then this is the place for you! This club will meet Wednesdays from September 27 through November 15 in Room 208 South. Space is limited to 12 students.


_______TAKE APART Club Leaders: Sandy Tarantino, 6th Grade Lang Arts/ S.S Teacher & Scott Kessler, 6th Grade Math/Science Teacher Do your parents get mad when you take stuff apart? Are your teachers annoyed when they find the parts of the mechanical pencil you deconstructed? Well, in this club, you are required to take stuff apart and see how it works. See you in the North science lab! We will meet Mondays 3:00 - 4:00, January 8 through February 26. Space is limited to 16 students.


_______THEATRI LIBERIS Club Leaders: Rob Miller, 5th Grade Math/Science Teacher & Rhonda Fox, 6th Grade Math/ Science Teacher Theatri Liberis (theatre by children) is this year's "drama club."  We will be focusing on improvisation skills this year.This club will meet on the stage in the gym or in the cafeteria from 3:00-4:00 every Wednesday starting January 10 through February.


_______WINTER WALKERS Club Leader Heather Neal, 5th grade Lang Arts/ SS teacher  Lace up those tennis shoes and stay strong this winter! Winter Walkers will enjoy walking together and getting to make new friends. Students will set personal goals, and we'll celebrate achievements together. Most walking will be done outdoors in the fresh air. This club will meet in the front lobby on Tuesdays from 3:10-4:00 from November 7 - February 27. There will be a $5 fee to cover the cost of a Tshirt. Space is limited to 15 students.

Send this form back to your child’s homeroom teacher or fill out online by Thursday, September 14. Homeroom teachers, please turn these into Amy Jamerson’s or Katrina Oliver’s mailbox as soon as you receive them. Students will be notified about club availability by Thursday, September 21.

Parents, You must pick up your child on time in order to participate in after school clubs. Late pick ups may result in your child’s spot being given to another student on the waiting list.
