2018-19 NWR After School Clubs

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS - 5TH GRADE Club Leaders: Kim Ferguson & Jeremy Aten,  Title I Reading Teachers, Danielle Cripps, EC Teacher, & Aubrey Cripps, 5th grade Language Arts/ SS teacher. Are you a fifth grader who loves to read? Then Battle of the Books is the club for you! BOB is an after school club for students who love to read.  Students work together throughout the school year to read a list of 18 books. In the spring, we will compete against other fifth grade teams on knowledge of the books. Teams consist of 12 students total, but six students compete per round. Students answer questions with the book title and author. Fifth grade BOB meets after school every Monday in the Media Center until 3:45 beginning October 22 through March 18. Go to the media center for a copy of the book list. Fee is $20.00 for a club t-shirt and lunch on the day of the competition. Space limited 12 students. BATTLE OF THE BOOKS - 6TH GRADE Club Leaders: Rachel Brillsour, Media Specialist & Dietra Garden, Art Teacher.  LOVE to read? Are you in sixth grade? The Battle of the Books is the club for you! Battle of the Books is an after school club for sixth grade students who LOVE to read. Students work throughout the school year to read a list of 27 books. In the spring we will compete against other Intermediate and Middle School teams on knowledge of the books. Teams consist of twelve students total, but six students compete per round. Students answer questions with the book title and author. Sixth grade Battle of the Books meets after school on Wednesdays until 3:30.  Fee is $20.00 for a club t-shirt and lunch on the day of the competition. The team will begin meeting on October 3 through March in the Media Center. Space is limited to 12 students.


CHESS CLUB Club Leaders: Ashley Willis, 6th Grade Language Arts /S..S. Teacher and Brandi Fleckenstein, 6th Grade Math/ Science Teacher. This class will be an opportunity for kids  to develop critical thinking skills while mastering the fundamentals of chess! We will meet in the Spring on Wednesdays 3:15-4:15 April 3 - May 1 in Room 408. Space is limited to 10 students.


CHORUS Club Leader: Barbara Budhisetiawan, Music Teacher. In Chorus, we sing and learn how to improve our voices and vocal techniques.  We will perform in school and in the community. Chorus members are expected to attend practices and performances. A $10 fee will cover the cost of a T-shirt. Chorus will meet in the Music Room 316 every Wednesday until 4:00 all year starting October 3 through May 29.  Space is limited to 60 students.


CROCHET CLUB Club Leader: Fleur Stone, EC Teacher. Learn basic crochet techniques and make something fun with yarn! This club will meet on Wednesdays from 3:10-4:00 beginning October 10 through December 12 in Ms. Stone's room 101. Space is limited to 10 students.


DRAMA CLUB Club Leaders Rob Miller, 5th Grade Math /Science Teacher, Rhonda Fox, 6th Grade Math /Science Teacher & Amanda Claffey, 6th Grade Language Arts/ S.S. Teacher. We will be learning about aspects of drama by performing The Hobbit.  This club will meet on Wednesdays until 4:30 starting mid-October through early February. Space is limited to 20 students.


GARDEN CLUB Club Leader: Marilynn Whitcher, 5th Grade Math /Science Teacher. Come get your hands dirty and take care of the NWR Garden. This club will meet 3 times in the Fall on Wednesdays October 10, 17, and 24. Then we will meet 3-4 weeks in the Spring - dates to be announced depending on weather. We will gather in Ms. Whitcher's room 205 South after second load bus at 3:15, then head out back to the NWR garden until 4:00. Space is limited to 15 students.


MATHCOUNTS Club Leaders Angela High, AIG Teacher &  Trista Huffman, 6th Grade Math /Science Teacher. The primary purpose of the NWR MATHCOUNTS Club is to foster a community of students around a common interest in mathematics. Club members will have opportunities to apply and improve math skills by participating in math competitions and learning circles.The goal at meetings is to solve highly challenging math problems. We welcome any 5th or 6th grade student to attend MATHCOUNTS Club! We will meet on Mondays October 1 thru November 26 from 3:00-4:00 in the North Science Lab Room 400. Space is limited to 20 students.


RUNNING CLUB  Club Leaders: Amy Jamerson, 6th Gr School Counselor, Devon Prott, 5th Gr Math/Science teacher, Trista Huffman, 6th Gr Math/Science teacher. Do you enjoy jogging?  If so, this club is for you. We will learn about stretching techniques, nutrition, and personal fitness. Each student will set goals to gradually increase their distance and improve their time, with the end goal of completing a 5K run. Please be prepared each week with appropriate outdoor clothing and tennis shoes. We’ll meet from 3:00-4:00 on Mondays during the Spring season, starting March 18 through May. We will begin each meeting in the cafeteria with a snack and then head out to run the NWR outdoor track and trails. $10 fee will cover T-shirts, snacks and water.  Space is limited to 50 students.


SAL (Student Author & Artist Library Club) Club Leader: Kelley Edmonds, 5th Grade Language Arts/ S.S. Teacher. Are you a future editor of a newspaper or magazine? Do you like writing with technology? If you answered yes, then SAL may be the club for you. The Student Author and Artist Library Club monitors and keeps track of our anonymous student library. Students submit their original artwork or writing samples and we review and publish them for only students at North Windy Ridge to see.  Students who join this club must be extremely responsible and have a strong sense of what is right and wrong. It is crucial that they have a passion for reading, writing and technology. An application process will include recommendations from teachers and a parent signature. We will meet on Wednesdays from 3:20-4:20 from October 10 - May 5 in Mrs. Edmonds' Room 207. Space is limited to 11 participants.


SCRAP BOOK CLUB Club Leaders: Erica Boyd, EC Teacher & Tara Teague, 5th Grade Math/ Science Teacher. Students will work to create a scrapbook to showcase their memorable experiences.  Joining this club will allow you to work with others as you bring your pictures to life. You will need to bring your pictures to each club meeting. You may choose to bring scrapbook materials that you have on hand. However, some materials will be available.  This club is free but any donations would be appreciated. We will meet on Tuesdays October 2 - November 13 in Mrs. Boyd's Room 100 from 3:10-4:00. Space is limited to 10 students.


SKI CLUB Club Leaders: Suzie Johnson, 5th Grade Math /Science teacher, Dietra Garden, Art Teacher, Tim Armerding, Custodian, Brent Wise, Principal. This winter, students will be able to ski (or learn to ski) for an exceptionally low price, thanks to Wolf Ridge Ski Resort supporting our school. Starting in January, when we return from winter break, students will be offered an after school ski trip every Tuesday through February 26 (weather permitting). The cost is $32 per student each week for transportation, lift ticket & ski rental. Group ski/ board lessons are included. (Snowboards can be rented for $5 more. A helmet is required. You may bring your own or rent one for $5). Permission forms and additional information will be sent home before the winter break in December. We will depart NWR at 3:00 pm and return to school by 8:30 pm for student pick up. Space is limited to 35 students.


VOLLEYBALL CLUB Club Leader: Cindy Anderson, PE Teacher. For willing workers interested in learning and practicing correct technique and form with basic volleyball skills. We will meet on Tuesdays 3:15-4:00 in the gym from January 8 - February 26. Space is limited to 12 students.


WINTER WALKERS Club Leader: Heather Neal, 5th grade Language Arts/ SS teacher.  Lace up those tennis shoes and stay strong this winter! Winter Walkers will enjoy walking together and getting to make new friends. Students will set personal goals, and we'll celebrate achievements together. Most walking will be done outdoors in the fresh air. This club will meet in Mrs. Neal's room 103 West on Tuesdays from 3:10-4:00 from November 27 - January 29. There will be a $5 fee to cover the cost of a t-shirt. Space is limited to 12 students.


3D PRINTING CLUB Club Leader: Russell Thompson, STEM Teacher. Did you know that we have two 3d printers in our school? Are you interested in learning how to use them? In this club, we will learn how to design and print using 3d printers. Sign up and bring your imaginations to life. This club will meet on Mondays 3:00-4:00 February 4 - March 25 in the STEM Room. Space is limited to 10 students.
